MEXICO CITY — Courtroom procedures in Mexico are drastically different from those in the U.S. Nearly the entire legal battle takes place on paper, with one stark exception: the careo. Literally the Spanish word for “confrontation,” this is a no-holds-barred face-off between the alleged victim and the person accused of the crime, and it can be devastating for the victim — especially when sexual assault is involved.
